Be Informed; Make the Right Decision for You
There is an abundance of information on choosing a cosmetic surgeon on the Internet. When considering a cosmetic procedure, the most important decision you will make is which surgeon will perform the procedure. Here are a few things to consider:
Ask friends and family for recommendations. Visit surgeon review sites to learn from other people’s experiences.
Always choose a surgeon who is board certified in a specialty recognized by ABMS. Then be sure the surgeon has been further trained in all aspects of cosmetic surgery. Be sure that your surgeon is practicing within the scope of their training. A fellowship-trained and Board-Certified Cosmetic Surgeon is certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and has completed a fellowship program with the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. This means the surgeon completed one to two years of training dedicated only to cosmetic surgery. A board-certified, fellowship-trained Cosmetic Surgeon must also have completed a residency from an ABMS surgical specialty training program.
Be sure your surgeon has privileges to perform cosmetic surgery at accredited surgery centers and hospitals. This is a sign of respect and trust within the health care community.
Look for an abundance of Before and After photos. You want to see a wide range of a surgeons work to be sure he or she produces consistent results. If a surgeon only makes available a few before and after shots, it’s a clue that he or she may not do many cosmetic procedures.
