What is a Thigh / Leg Lift (Thighplasty)?
A Thighplasty addresses inner or outer thighs that can sometimes hang excessively and have a great deal of loose skin. This can occur after massive weight loss, such as after bariatric surgery or with aging. In these cases, liposuction alone will simply make the skin hang more and the thighs look worse. When this occurs a thigh lift is a better procedure because the excess skin is removed. In addition to cutting out the extra skin and pulling upward, liposuction is a part of most every thigh lift.
The Goal of a Thigh Lift
A thigh / leg lift removes fatty tissue and skin. A thigh lift involves different incisions depending on if the inner or outer thigh is being lifted or both. If the outer thigh is being lifted, the incision is located over the hip area. If the inner thigh is being lifted the incisions run along the groin area next to the labia, underneath and back towards the buttocks.
A thigh / leg lift is performed by first liposuctioning the thigh. Depending on what is being done, we suction the inner thigh, outer thigh or both. After this, a large amount of skin and fat is cut out in a crescent shape. The two edges are pulled together which lifts the thigh. The incisions are then closed. This effectively thins the thigh, removes extra skin and fat and lifts the thigh. The main disadvantage of a thigh lift is the long incision that heals with tension -- making the scars fairly prominent.
