Juvéderm is an anti-aging injectable cosmetic that improves the appearance of lines and wrinkles and adds dimension to facial features. The fast-acting treatment is made possible thanks to hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in our bodies.
About Hyaluronic Acid
Juvéderm has been in use since 2003, but scientists discovered its key ingredient, hyaluronic acid, nearly a century ago. In 1934, German biochemist Karl Meyer and colleague John Palmer discovered the gel-like substance while studying the fluid of the eye. This chemical compound is found in several places in our bodies, including our joints, and in the deep layers of our dermis.
Although they had little understanding of its potential benefits, advances in science and medicine, and the ability to produce a long-lasting synthetic version have led to the widespread usage of hyaluronic acid. And, one of its most popular forms is the key ingredient in dermal fillers for facial rejuvenation.
On a molecular level, HA’s role in the body is to attract and bind to water molecules. When injected beneath the skin, HA gel expands to add volume and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The presence of this additional HA also promotes the health of the extracellular matrix, where the important structural elements that support firm, youthful skin are produced.
