Microneedling is a cosmetic skin rejuvenation technique that uses tiny needles that can drastically improve the effects of aging, acne scars, and other forms of scarring. This treatment causes a controlled skin injury that creates rapidly healing micro punctures in the skin.

Softer, Smoother, Rejuvenated Skin

The tiny punctures created by microneedling stimulate the body’s collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production, which helps the skin strengthen and restructure. Collagen and elastin are both vital protein components in skin healing and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid plays an important role in keeping skin hydrated and protected. When the body produces these compounds as a response to microneedling, it results in newly healed skin with a smoother, revitalized aesthetic.

Choosing the Right Skin Treatment

Scars can have a lasting effect on our body image, self-esteem, and relationships.(1) At Southern Surgical Arts, we want you to be happy with the way you look! We are proud to offer microneedling treatments to suit a variety of needs:

Sylfirm X

RF-assisted microneedling devices are particularly successful in reducing both wrinkles and acne scars. Sylfirm X is a dual wave radiofrequency (RF) microneedling system for the treatment of skin laxity and pigmentation issues. Treatments that utilize radiofrequency energy are a minimally-invasive way to tighten skin safely and and remodel underlying fat deposits.(2)

In a Sylfirm X procedure, we administer RF energy as heat in pulsed waves to tighten the skin, while the microneedling promotes a flood of healing components to the targeted area. Collagen and elastin levels rise, producing noticeably rejuvenated skin with improved texture and tone. In addition to these great benefits, a Sylfirm X microneedling treatment requires no anesthesia, significantly reducing patient downtime!

Rejuvapen

Rejuvapen is another precision microneedling device that can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and dull skin tone. It also firms and tightens tissues. It uses a specialized pen-like handpiece containing a cartridge with ultra fine needles. These needles are made of surgical grade stainless steel. Its patented tip ensures no blockages, and there’s no uncomfortable suction or heat involved.

Unlike Sylfirm X, a Rejuvapen treatment does not involve skin heating. However, this form of microneedling is highly customizable! It can be dialed to patient-specific depths for tailored treatment! Over successive sessions, skin rejuvenates with replenished collagen and elastin. And, for those who want extra help with their skin tone and texture, Rejuvapen can deliver skin strengthening topicals deep into targeted tissues. This is particularly useful in the treatment of acne and melasma.

Benefits of Microneedling

Research studies have shown that microneedling has been proven to reduce the appearance of acne scars, (3)  and in most cases, it is suitable for all skin types and skin tones. The process encourages the body’s natural response to the micro-injuries caused by its tiny needles. Collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid can then be produced in large amounts by the body, resulting in the aesthetic rejuvenation of your skin. In-office microneedling procedures:

  • Are Cost-Effective
  • Improve Skin Texture
  • Reduce Acne Scarring
  • Smooth Wrinkles and Lines
  • Reduce Pore Size
  • Induce Rapid Skin Healing
  • Are Virtually Painless

Candidates for Microneedling

Microneedling is available to patients of any age and skin type. Great candidates for microneedling include patients who:

  • Have acne scarring
  • Have uneven skin texture
  • Have wrinkles and fine lines
  • Have hyperpigmented skin
  • Are not good candidates for chemical peels

Please note that microneedling is not suitable for every candidate. You may be advised not to proceed with this type of treatment if you have active acne or wounds in your chosen treatment area, or if you have used Accutane to treat your acne within 3 months of your proposed microneedling procedure.

Preparing for Treatment

Before your microneedling procedure, your skin should be well prepared. Here’s a helpful timeline to make sure you’re ready for your procedure:

In the Months Before Your Microneedling Treatment:

  • Discontinue use of Accutane to treat acne 3 months before you plan on receiving microneedling.

1-2 Weeks Before Microneedling Treatment:

  • Limit unnecessary sun exposure as much as possible, using sunscreen where sun exposure is unavoidable
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning agents one week ahead of your treatment date.
  • Stop using exfoliants, acids, and retinoids 5-7 days prior to your treatment.

In the Days Before Microneedling Treatment:

  • Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil and Motrin for at least 3 days before your microneedling session
  • Don’t shave, wax, use depilatory creams, or electrolysis in the area of treatment 5-7 days prior.
  • Take Valacyclovir or similar antiviral cold sore remedies for 2 days prior to and on the day of the treatment if you are prone to or currently experiencing an active breakout.

The Microneedling Procedure

Although each microneedling procedure has its own distinct advantages, the basic steps are similar. Initially, your skin will be thoroughly cleaned and numbing agents will be applied. After this, an experienced medical practitioner will begin your chosen treatment by carefully moving the microneedling device over the targeted area. This tool will make minuscule channels deep into the skin to stimulate your body’s production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. During the procedure, you may feel a small amount of discomfort, but this is improved with numbing cream. Although you may experience temporary skin tightness during and after your microneedling procedure, you will be relieved to know that unlike many rejuvenation treatments there is zero downtime! After leaving our care, you will be able to jump right back into your daily schedule.

Recovery & Results

A rejuvenating microneedling treatment triggers a flood of healing compounds that target the mico-injured skin tissues. You may therefore experience some transient tightness and stinging immediately after your procedure. Many patients liken this temporary feeling to a mild sunburn.

Your healing time will vary according to the individual characteristics of your skin, however, most patients heal fully within a few days. During this time, you will be able to continue with your daily schedule! Once your procedure is complete, we will ask you to follow these aftercare directions:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the treated area.
  • Avoid wearing makeup for a full 24 hour period after your microneedling procedure.
  • Use a topical antibiotic cream approved by your doctor.
  • Apply sunscreen every day for two weeks after your treatment.
  • Don’t use swimming pools, steam rooms, or saunas for at least 72 hours after your treatment
  • Avoid any activities that may cause intense sweating up to 72 hours after your treatment.

You may not have to wait long before you can see the promising results of your medical microneedling procedure. In just a few days, you will notice your skin has a smoother, more radiant appearance, with your acne scarring minimized and the ability to go about your daily activities with confidence! For your chance to reduce the appearance of your acne scarring, speak to our friendly staff by calling (800) 950-0492 or contact us online to book a personal consultation.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Chemical Peel

You may choose to combine microneedling treatment with a chemical peel. While microneedling will focus on improving the deeper scarring, a chemical peel can resolve more superficial skin issues for a comprehensive skin revitalization procedure.

Xeomin

Injectables and microneedling is the perfect combination of treatments to enhance the natural glow of your skin! While it is not recommended you schedule Xeomin treatment on the same day as your microneedling appointment, you can safely get dermal neuromodulator injections a week before coming in for your microneedling procedure.

Schedule a free consultation with one of our healthcare professionals to talk about combining other rejuvenating treatments with a microneedling procedure.

Cost of Microneedling

At Southern Surgical Arts, our team of professionals will make your skin revitalization process as simple as it possibly can be! Each procedure, including microneedling, will vary in price according to the type of treatment you elect to have, which area of the body you are targeting, and how large those areas are. Additionally, financing may be available for qualified candidates.

FAQ

Can microneedling reduce my acne scars?

Yes! Microneedling can improve both deep and superficial acne scarring. Using a handheld device, a medical professional can target areas of scarring with fine microneedles. This process triggers your body’s production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid to heal the area, which leads to a reduction in the appearance of scarring and results in a smoother, healthier-looking skin tone.

Are in-office microneedling procedures better than at home?

Medical professionals will always recommend in-office microneedling procedures for safety and aesthetic reasons. A qualified professional can provide expert treatment using the latest handheld dermal devices. This removes the risk of unfortunate home dermal roller application caused by poorly angled needle tips, and insufficient or inaccurate rolling that may cause more skin damage.
