What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to enhance the size, shape, and volume of the breasts. It's a highly customizable procedure, with saline, silicone, and gummy bear implants all available depending on the look and feel you're going for, and it remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures performed today.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

  • Enhances breast size, shape, and volume
  • Improves overall body proportions
  • Offers extensive customization in implant size, material, texture, and placement
  • Boosts self-esteem with fuller, more symmetrical breasts
  • Delivers long-lasting results, often 10 years or more before replacement is needed

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Good candidates for breast augmentation are women interested in increasing breast volume, correcting visual irregularities, or reconstructing the breast after a mastectomy. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, free of conditions that could impair healing, hold realistic expectations for their results, and are non-smokers or willing to stop smoking until fully healed.

Why Choose Southern Surgical Arts for Breast Augmentation?

Our surgeons offer a full range of implant options, including saline and silicone implants from Allergan® and gummy bear implants from Natrelle®, so your procedure can be tailored to the exact look and feel you want. We walk you through every option in detail so your decision feels fully informed.

Your Consultation

Your first step is a personal consultation, where your surgeon gets to know your goals and evaluates your anatomy to determine the best approach. From there, your surgeon builds a treatment plan customized to help you achieve the results you have in mind.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

Breast augmentation at Southern Surgical Arts begins at $8,000 before additional costs are factored in, with your exact price depending on implant type, technique, and your specific goals. You'll receive a full quote at your consultation, and financing options are available to help manage the cost.

What to Expect During Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

Anesthesia and Incision

You'll receive anesthesia to keep you comfortable, and your surgeon will make an incision in one of several possible locations, determined ahead of time at your consultation.

Implant Placement

A pocket is created either above or below the pectoral muscle, called subglandular or submuscular placement, and the implant is carefully positioned.

Closing

Incisions are closed with care to support clean healing, and the procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting with IV sedation and local anesthesia.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Swelling and bruising are normal in the days following surgery and will gradually subside, with any discomfort manageable through pain medication. Most patients return to work within one to two weeks, though physical activity and other strenuous tasks should wait several weeks or until your surgeon advises otherwise.

You'll return for follow-up appointments in the weeks after your procedure so your surgeon can monitor your progress.

Breast Augmentation Results

A noticeable difference is visible immediately after surgery, with your final results becoming clearer as residual swelling fades. Most patients enjoy an enhanced size, shape, and fullness that boosts their overall confidence, with results generally lasting 10 to 15 years before implants need replacing.

Types of Breast Implants

Saline Implants

Saline implants use a silicone shell filled with sterile saline solution and are placed empty before being filled, which can allow for a smaller incision and shorter recovery. If a saline implant leaks, the solution is safely absorbed by the body, and any resulting change in shape lets you know it's time for a replacement.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel, offering a softer, more natural feel than saline. Patients with silicone implants are advised to have periodic MRIs to check for silent rupture, since a leak isn't always noticeable on its own.

Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy bear implants are a type of silicone implant known for their firm, stable consistency, similar to a gummy bear candy. Their thicker gel filling is generally associated with a lower risk of rupture or leakage compared to traditional silicone implants.

Related Procedures

  • Breast Lift: Often combined with augmentation for patients who want both more volume and a more lifted position.
  • Breast Revision: For patients looking to replace or adjust existing implants.
  • Mommy Makeover: Combines augmentation with other procedures to address post-pregnancy changes.
  • Liposuction: Can complement augmentation as part of overall body contouring.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Most women can still breastfeed after breast augmentation, though this can depend on the incision location and your individual anatomy. Any concerns about future breastfeeding are worth discussing during your consultation.

Will there be visible scarring?

Scar visibility depends on incision placement and your individual healing process. Our surgeons use techniques designed to minimize scarring and position incisions as discreetly as possible.

What was the Allergan® textured implant recall?

In 2019, the FDA identified a link between certain textured breast implants and a rare condition called BIA-ALCL, leading Allergan® to recall its textured BIOCELL implants. The FDA does not recommend removing or replacing textured implants in patients without symptoms, but our surgeons are available to answer any questions if you received one of these implants in the past.

Is breast augmentation painful?

Most patients experience manageable discomfort rather than significant pain, and it's typically controlled with prescribed medication during the first several days after surgery.

Will breast augmentation affect mammograms?

Breast implants can make certain areas of breast tissue harder to see on a standard mammogram, so it's important to tell your mammography technician about your implants beforehand. Additional imaging views are sometimes used to get a complete picture.

How do I choose the right implant size?

Implant size is a personal decision based on your current anatomy, body proportions, and the look you're hoping to achieve. Your surgeon will help you visualize different options during your consultation to find the right fit.

What are the risks of breast augmentation?

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries some risk of infection, bleeding, implant rupture, or capsular contracture. These risks are minimized when the procedure is performed by an experienced, board-certified surgeon.

Southern Surgical Arts is ready to help you achieve breasts that feel fully, confidently your own. Schedule your St. Petersburg breast augmentation consultation today and let our team build a plan around your goals.
