About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a procedure that often incorporates implants to help patients achieve fuller, more symmetrical breasts. Breast implants can be composed of either silicone or saline, with each offering unique benefits. There are many different techniques and strategies to help patients achieve their ideal aesthetic, making this procedure highly customizable. This procedure has been one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures since 2006. (2)
Types of Breast Implants
At our practice, we offer saline or silicone implants by Allergan® and gummy bear implants from Natrelle®.
Saline Implants
Saline implants are composed of a silicone shell and are filled with a sterile saline solution. These implants are typically placed empty and inflated with saline once placed. Because saline implants often require a smaller incision, they potentially offer patients a shorter recovery time than silicone implants. If a saline implant leaks or ruptures, the sterile solution is safely absorbed by the body, and visible changes in the breasts will allow patients to know when they should get a deflated implant replaced.
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants are a type of implant made from a cohesive silicone gel. Silicone implants are typically associated with a softer, more natural feel than saline implants. Patients who receive silicone implants will need to receive intermittent MRIs to ensure their implants are not leaking or “silently rupturing.” (3)
Gummy Bear Implants
Gummy bear implants, also known as cohesive gel implants, are a type of silicone breast implant we offer from Natrelle®. Gummy bear implants are named for their unique consistency, which resembles that of a gummy bear candy.
Gummy bear implants differ from traditional silicone implants in the way their filling is formulated. Gummy bear implants consist of a thicker, more viscous silicone gel that offers a more stable, firm feel. Because of its viscosity, gummy bear implants are generally associated with a lower risk of rupture or leakage.
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
There are many benefits patients can experience after a breast augmentation, including:
- Enhanced Aesthetics: Patients can improve the size, shape, and volume of the breasts, creating a more youthful-looking contour and more desirable aesthetic appearance.
- Improved Proportions: Increasing the size and shape of the breasts can help create a more balanced, proportional figure.
- Customizable Treatment: Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure, with many options regarding the size, material, texture, and placement of the implants.
- Enhanced Confidence: Fuller, more symmetrical breasts can lead to improved self-esteem.
- Long-Lasting Results: The results of breast augmentation are long-lasting, as patients often do not need to get their implants replaced for 10 years or longer.

Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates for breast augmentation are typically women interested in increasing the volume of their breasts through the use of implants. Breast augmentation may also be used to help reconstruct the breasts after a mastectomy or to help correct any visual irregularities.
All candidates interested in breast augmentation should be in good overall health, free of any underlying medical conditions that may impair healing. Additionally, candidates should also hold realistic expectations about the outcome of their procedure. Patients should also be nonsmokers or willing to cease smoking until fully healed.
Personal Consultation
The first step to breast augmentation is attending a personal consultation at one of our state-of-the-art facilities. The purpose of this consultation is not only for our team to get to know each patient more personally, but also to better understand how we can help them achieve their goals. Our surgeon will discuss the details of the procedure with each patient while also learning more about their concerns and desired outcomes. The surgeon will then evaluate the breasts to determine what approach would be most effective. After collecting all the necessary information, the surgeon will craft each patient’s treatment plan, customizing aspects to help each individual achieve their goals.

Preparation
Each patient will receive a set of pre-operative guidelines at their consultation, instructing them on how to properly prepare for their breast augmentation. The patient must follow these instructions to facilitate a smooth recovery and ensure the most ideal outcome.
Patients should temporarily cease or adjust their use of certain medications and supplements, particularly those with blood-thinning properties. Those who smoke should quit several weeks before their appointment, refraining from use until fully healed. Patients should also arrange to take time away from work following their treatment, as well as transportation home after their procedure.
Procedure
The procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure each patient feels comfortable throughout the augmentation. The surgeon will then make an incision in one of three places, which will be predetermined by each patient’s surgeon at their consultation.
Incision placements include:
- Periareolar: Periareolar incisions are made around the lower border of the areola. This incision can additionally be used to help reduce the size of enlarged or stretched areolas.
- Inframammary Crease: The inframammary crease refers to the lower crease underneath the breast. This incision placement is ideal for minimizing the visibility of scars.
- Periumbilical: This incision placement, known as the TUBA method, is made at the navel. Periumbilical incisions leave no scarring on the breast and preserve each patient’s ability to breastfeed. However, this incision placement can only be used for saline implants. (4)
- Axillary: Axillary, also known as the transaxillary or armpit incision, is placed in the folds of the armpit. This incision placement hides any scarring under the arms.
After making the incision, the surgeon will create a pocket to place the implants in. This pocket can either be placed beneath or above the pectoral muscle. When placed below the muscle, this is referred to as submuscular placement, and when the implant is placed above, it is referred to as subglandular placement. Once the pocket is created, they will place the implants. The surgeon will then carefully close the incisions.
This procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting with IV sedation and local anesthesia.
Recovery and Results
The surgeon will provide each patient with a set of post-operative guidelines for their breast augmentation. It is normal to experience swelling and bruising, but these effects will gradually dissipate on their own. Any discomfort may be alleviated through the use of pain medication under the guidance of the Southern Surgical Arts team.
Patients can often return to work within one to two weeks, but should refrain from physical activity or other strenuous tasks for several weeks, or until their surgeon advises. All patients will return for follow-up appointments over the weeks following breast augmentation so that we can monitor their progress.
A significant difference can immediately be seen in the chest following the procedure, but the full results will become more apparent as any residual swelling subsides. Patients will be able to enjoy an enhanced size, shape, and fullness following their procedure. Most women who undergo this procedure may also find that their new silhouette can enhance their overall confidence and self-esteem.

Allergan® Textured Implant Recall
As of Spring of 2019, the FDA announced that there was a concerning correlation between textured breast implants and the development of breast-implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). While cases are still overall rare, Allergan® takes the health of its patients very seriously. Considering this, they have announced a recall of their textured BIOCELL and Natrelle® saline and silicone implants. (5)
The FDA does not recommend the removal or replacement of textured breast implants in patients without BIA-ALCL symptoms. If you received a textured Allergan® implant in the past and have questions, the surgeons at Southern Surgical Arts are here to help.
FAQ
Will I need to replace my implants after my breast augmentation?
Patients are recommended to replace their implants every ten to fifteen years.
Can I breastfeed after a breast augmentation?
Women can normally breastfeed after their procedure, however, any concerns should be discussed at your consultation.
Will there be any visible scarring after my breast augmentation?
The visibility of scarring will largely depend on the placement of the incisions, in addition to each patient’s healing process. Our surgeons utilize a variety of different techniques to help minimize scarring.
