What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure with the goal of adding volume to the breast for a more youthful, full appearance. The additional volume comes from placing an implant behind your natural breast tissue or chest muscle, The implants are filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel, both of which are FDA approved devices. Dr. Nease at Southern Surgical Arts offers saline and silicone implants in partnership with Mentor Corporation. Silicone gel implants are FDA approved for cosmetic use in women over the age of 22.

These procedures are typically performed in an outpatient setting with IV sedation and local anesthesia. The breast augmentation procedure typically takes no more than 45 minutes, and the incision is less than 1 inch long and hidden in the breast crease or along the areolar border. Recovery is usually no more than a few days, with return to normal activity in a week.

The regular price of breast augmentation at Southern Surgical Arts begins at $4,800. Your quote will include the surgeon's fee, anesthesia costs and the facility fee for the operating room and all other suppies and implants when indicated. The total price at Southern Surgical Arts also includes all routine follow visits and pre-op lab work.

Some surgery centers bundle the price of the procedure into one total fee like we do at Southern Surgical Arts and others may only quote you their surgeon's fee so that their prices seem less. We will give you the total surgery price.

Breast enlargement, or augmentation mammoplasty, enhances the body contour of a woman who is unhappy with her breast size. It may also be used to correct volume loss after pregnancy, or to help balance breast size asymmetries, as well as a reconstructive technique following other breast surgery. The operation is carried out under general anesthesia and usually on an outpatient basis. An implant (prosthesis) may be placed through an incision, under the breast tissue or under the muscle or through an incision in the belly button region. The incision can be made under the breast, around the nipple or in the armpit. It generally takes one to two hours to complete the entire procedure. A breast implant is usually composed of an outer silicone shell filled with saline (salt water). The outer surface may be smooth or textured, and implants come in various shapes to meet the individual woman’s needs.

While breast augmentation will enlarge the breasts, it will not alter basic defects in breast shape or form. Major asymmetries may be improved but will not be completely corrected. A slight difference in the size or shape of the two breasts is considered normal and should not be a cause for concern. If breast size or nipple position asymmetries are severe then additional procedures to further improve symmetry may be necessary. Long experience with this operation has demonstrated it to have highly satisfactory results for the majority of patients who are considered suitable candidates for the surgery.

Breat Augmentation Incision Points

To enhance a patient’s personal preference of a breast augmentation at Southern Surgical Arts, Dr. Nease and Dr. Deal offer different types of incision points for the procedure. The incision placement decision is determined in the consultation with the doctor and is based on your anatomy, your desired outcome and the size and shape of the breast implants. Southern Surgical Arts offers an inframammary breast augmentation (under breast crease incision), a transaxillary breast augmentation (armpit incision), and a peri-areola breast augmentation (edge of the nipple incision).

Inframmamary Breast Augmentation

An inframammary breast augmentation (under breast crease incision) is Southern Surgical Art’s preferred type of breast augmentation. The inframammary incision is placed along the crease or fold of the breast, where the implant will then be placed behind your natural breast tissue or chest muscle. The small incision then becomes well hidden with the natural curvature of the breast. An advantage of the inframammary incision is that it allows the surgeon to have greater visualization of the breast pocket while helping the accuracy of the implants placement, leading to a low revision rate. Both saline and silicone implants can be used in any size for the inframammary breast augmentation.

Transaxillary Breast Augmentation

A transaxillary breast augmentation (armpit incision) has an incision made in the natural fold of the armpit tissue. The breast implant is put in through the incision that is created through a channel from the armpit to the breast. The incision is small and well hidden in the depth of the armpit and becomes barely noticeable because it blends in with the natural crease of the armpit. A transaxillary breast augmentation is ideal for a patient who wants to avoid scars on the breast and avoids cutting through the breast tissue when placing the implant underneath the muscle. A disadvantage can be that there is a longer recovery time compared to an inframmamory breast augmentation as well as a slightly higher revision rate.

Peri-Areola Breast Augmentation

A peri-areola breast augmentation (edge of the nipple incision) has an incision made on the edge of the nipple, where the lighter breast tissue meets the darker breast tissue. The implant is then inserted through the nipple incision site. Incision through the edge of the nipple allows for the scar to blend in better. This type of breast augmentation is not ideal for patients who have a small areola wanting large silicone implants due to the difficulty of placement. The peri-areola incision is commonly used only when a breast augmentation and nipple lift is combined.
