Even though the labiaplasty procedure remains mostly unknown among the general public, around 2,200 procedures were performed in 2011 according the the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Dr. Deal, a double board-certified cosmetic surgeon at Southern Surgical Arts performs the procedure and was trained in Las Vegas by a world-renowed plastic and cosmetic surgeon during his cosmetic surgery fellowship in 2009 and 2010.
Women often do not know that these cosmetic procedures are available to them. “I primarily see women who have had children interested in the procedure,” says Dr. Deal. “Although the procedure can be done on it’s own, we primarily do perform the procedure as part of a complete patient plan such as the Mommy Makeover Plus.” The Mommy Makeover Plus includes a labiaplasty and usually a breast augmentation (with or without lift), a tummy tuck and liposuction.
“Unfortunately there is still a stigma attached to a procedure like this that is quickly erased when someone sees first hand what dramatic changes women can undergo with pregnancy or even be born with…when you show the before and after photos to new potential patients they are almost in tears when they realize have options for regaining their normal appearance,” says Dr.Deal. Women primarily visit Dr. Deal after giving birth, but also after changes from significant weight loss, aging, or because they were born with asymmetries.
The procedure can be performed on the labia majora and minora. The majoria can be improved by adding fat to reduce wrinkling and extra skin. The majora is shortened and shaped to give a more youthful and symmetric appearance.
